Hi Alex, really nice work on this one!
Great composition and storytelling, I think the illustration is very good already, but if I could add or change something I would put a diagonal line one the top left pointing to the horse (maybe a curved branch/tree inside the water?), just to make the forest even more interesting.
(Sorry couldn’t draw over image to show you, but flooded amazon forests photos can help you have some ideas, I think)

Anxious to see an update, I’m loving this one!

    Hi Alexandra!
Lovely concept and it’s clear you know your stuff with drawing horses.

The Kelpie’s tail is drawing my eye in a distracting way because of how it’s cropped. I’d suggest lowering the horizon line and restaging it to have much more of the tail in view as a foreground element leading the eye into the picture plane. It’s such a great design element.

Lowering the horizon could also allow you to push the perspective and increase the depth of the piece as you show the tree trunks receding into the distance. Looking forward to seeing an a=n update on this one!

Hi Alexandra, hope to help you with the bits I know!
This piece is great in color and light, but it has a very squared composition, the character is very straight and the background is composed by vertical and horizontal lines only.
Nature is very organic, so you can work with any kind of shape on the trees, curved branches or maybe one that have fallen into the river. The background could be lighter too, with very little contrast, putting the focus clearly on the character.
It would also be nice if the woman had a more dynamic pose, as if entering in unknown ruins, carefully, but ready to attack anything that could appear.

I found this illustration by Wesley Burt, that could be a great reference for your piece, specially for the background: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/lGbaO

Thank you so much for the crit! You are so right about the background and the organic shapes, I’ll have to make some notes and keep those in mind!
