EASEL OF Emily Pritchett

I started off liking the sense of space, but now I'm worried it looks too empty and boring.

I feel like the figure might be too close to the center. Maybe if you to move him over to the right and make him a bit larger? I think it looks lovely.

I'm not sure how much to separate the foreground figures from the background. Should I keep a strong value contrast, or let them blend in a little more on the edges?

This one is meant to be more cartoony, but I'm finding it hard to strike the right balance between being simplified or stylized, and still having realistic forms.

    Hi, Emily.
All of your images are awesome. This is the only one that I actually have any qualms with, mostly because I’m a little confused as to what’s going on.
It seems like the girl is holding a staff that is turning day into night, and the ‘night’ is swirling up at them?

I like that idea (if that’s indeed what it is), but it’s getting lost in the rendering. I think you need to plan your values better so that the main idea is the first thing to come across.
If it doesn’t make the concept read faster and/or stronger… get rid of it.

I also question the wisdom of putting a light value figure on the light background, and a dark valued figure on the dark part of the background. It makes both of them get lost.
Swap that if you can, or play up the silhouettes more so they pop off.

I'm an illustrator who works on children's books, book covers, and game art. Most of my work has a fantasy or historical bent. I work mainly digitally these days, but occasionally I also do some acrylics or oils.

I WOULD LIKE HELP WITH

These are a just a couple of personal projects I have going right now. I guess I'm mostly looking for advice on composition, since that's what I seem to be struggling most with lately. With all three of these I'm mostly working on getting a good division between light and dark, making the whole image readable, and also dynamic. Any tips, or resources to look, at would be appreciated! I'll try to update my images as I work on them, so you can see the direction I'm taking them.
